If you’ve clicked on this, it's highly likely that you’ve seen Ali Wong’s comedy performance somewhere. You might even be aware that she released a book in 2019 called Dear Girls. So here is my review of her wonderfully written book that was written as a letter to her two daughters.

Ali Wong is an amazing comedian known for her Netflix shows where she was pregnant with her daughters. Her striped dress and leopard-printed dress became very popular. A comic who is a female and especially performing while pregnant was unique, and that fame led her to get a chance to write a book. She was also a writer for movie series before she even started her standup career. She also had to do it on her side because life as a stand-up comedian is not easy, and the earning opportunities are pathetic in the beginning.

What to expect
She delves into her struggles before becoming a successful standup comedian, which she explains through stories. There is probably a reason why we don’t see a lot of female comics, and she explains why. She also talks about how she met her husband after going through a series of disappointing men. She recollects it through funny stories. She gives badass advice as well about dealing with and dating men. The book contains just unbeautified bare truths about life, giving birth, and so many things that we need to hear, especially for a woman. There’s a lot of life stories from her childhood, her parents, her culture, and how it shaped her. It is a good read if you want some unfiltered advice in life, love, and work and to know Ali a little better.

Who can read
This is definitely not a typical book that anybody can read. You definitely need some context and is pretty much specific to some audiences. It seems especially useful and fun to read for a girl who knows some basics of standup comedy and its world. If you are an Ali Wong fan, you should definitely give it a read, and it doesn’t matter which gender you belong to. She is just as funny and open and dirty in her book, and you will get to know her better and feel closer to her. Talking about dirty stuff in her book, this is strictly 21+, or at least 18+, given the speed at which kids are learning about these things in this generation.

The Read
It is a fun read that is absolutely not information-intensive, except for some of her advice that you might have to note down somewhere. It also contains American slang words, and so you might have to google that from time to time if you don’t understand but want to.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It gave a perspective on what these comedians go through before getting their Netflix Special. Being a stand-up comedy lover and a woman, I learned a lot and gained more respect for these wonderful souls who go through stuff and yet manage to make us laugh.

Thank you so much for reading. If you like this, please show some love and clap for me :)
